The Wayne County Sheriff's Department added two new vehicles to its
fleet, thanks to a USDA Rural Development grant. USDA officials were in
Wayne County last week to make the official presentation.
Sheriff Charlie Boston was presented a ceremonial key representing the
recent vehicle purchase.
His department received a $27,726 Community Facilities Grant, which was
matched with county money in order to purchase the patrol units.
The two vehicles‹both Dodge Chargers‹are already on patrol, according to
Boston. He is using one of the Chargers, while the other is being used by
one of the deputies.
This makes a total of six new vehicles that have been added recently to
the Sheriff's Department fleet.
They previously purchased three Chevrolet Impalas and another Dodge
Charger, which was paid for through the Sheriff's Department budget.
"It's saved us a lot of maintenance," noted Boston. "These are much
better than the vehicles we were using and they haven't cost us anything in
maintenance."
Boston said that they have applied for another grant that would allow
the department to continue to improve their patrol fleet.
The official presentation was made on Wednesday, March 19 at the Wayne
County Justice Center.
