Last day for Wayne County students changed to May 16

Melodie Phelps, News Editor
Wayne County Outlook

Monticello Students in the Wayne County School system got a surprise last week,

when they learned that school would be dismissed a few days earlier than

originally planned. The final day for classes in Wayne County will be

Friday, May 16, instead of May 21.

Superintendent John Dalton made the announcement to staff and students

on Friday morning. According to Dalton, Wayne County Schools had recently

petitioned the state for a waiver to cover some of the school days missed

due to inclement weather and illness.

Dalton explained that in years past, the district has used extra minutes

of instructional time that is built into the school day to help make up for

days that are missed because of weather. But education officials did not

approve it earlier this spring as has been the case in previous years.

Dalton said the district was notified late last week that Wayne County

had been awarded credit for two school days. This is possible by allowing

time "banked" during regular school days to count for the two instructional

days.

"We are pleased to be able to end the school year near our projected

calendar date," stated Dalton. "I know our staff and students have worked

very hard this year and I wish them all a safe, fun, and well-deserved

summer vacation."

With this change, the last day for teachers will be Monday, May 19.

Dalton noted that graduation for Wayne County seniors will remain

Friday, May 23.
