City Council hears first reading of proposed budget for next year

Monticello During a meeting held Monday evening, Monticello City Council heard the

first reading of the proposed budget for the next fiscal year.

The general fund budget for next year totals $1,973,481. Appropriations

in the general fund next year include: general administration, $443,348;

police department, $751,111; fire department, $245,530; and dispatching/911

board, $115,000.

The water, sewer and garbage fund for next year totals $3,644,766 and

the capital projects budget is $6,365,000. This includes several ongoing

projects, like downtown water and sewer work, as well as the streetscaping

project.

During Monday's meeting, Mayor Kenneth Catron noted that Monticello had

been awarded nearly $1.5 million in state funding for various water and

sewer projects. The funding was included in the state budget.

The budget will require second reading and council approval before it is

adopted.

Also during Monday's meeting, the council approved the second reading of

an ordinance amending the current fiscal year's budget. The amendment

included increased revenues in property taxes, intergovernmental revenue and

grants, fines, charges for other services, and non-revenue sources. Overall,

general fund revenues increased from $1,648,257 to $2,781,985.

The amended budget increased expenditures in general administration, the

police department, the street department, municipal road aid, the park

department, and the fire department.

In other action, the council:

€ Approved the reappointment of Stewart York to the Monticello Utility

Commission.

€ Approved the reappointment of Darrell Burton to the Tax Appeals Board.

€ Approved the reappointment of Ruth Smith to the Monticello Housing

Authority.
