DAV to order War Memorial

Monticello —
It's something that Wayne County has needed for years, and thanks to
generous donors, it will become a reality this year. The Wayne County
Disabled American Veterans will soon order a War Memorial that will be
erected in front of the Justice Center on Columbia Avenue.
"We have come up with a design that we all agree with and we are about
ready to order it...We hope to have it in place by Veterans' Day," said Don
Lair, who is the Commander of the D.A.V., Chapter 105.
Local residents had an opportunity to see a model of the memorial, when
it was unveiled at the Memorial Day service earlier this week. The memorial
will be made of black granite and it will include the names of Wayne
Countians who died in service to their country.
"We have been planning this for over a year," said Lair. "We just felt
like it was time to do this...We have the Doughboy and we have the bell, and
the names are kind of scattered. With this being at the Justice Center, it
gives people a place to park and take their time to visit the memorial. They
can even taking etchings of a name."
The centerpiece of the memorial is an American flag. Under the flag is
the statement, "Some Gave All." It also includes the names of all branches
of the service.
The centerpiece is nearly six feet tall, according to Lair. The memorial
itself will be 19 feet long and it will weigh about 10,000 pounds.
Lists of names have been compiled of casualties from World War I, World
War II, Korea, and Vietnam, and they will be included on each side of the
centerpiece.
The memorial will be paid for through donations, including a
contribution from Wayne County Fiscal Court. The Disabled American Veterans
are planning a couple of roadblocks to help raise funds for the memorial.
The first is set for Saturday, June 7. Also there are plans underway for a
golf tournament, with proceeds going toward the memorial
Lair is pleased with this memorial project and he hopes that it is the
first step toward securing a veterans memorial for Wayne County. Someday he
would like to see it expanded to include names of all veterans.
Anyone who would like to contribute to the memorial can send donations
to: Wayne County Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 944, Monticello, Ky.
42633.
"All donations are appreciation and all the money will be spent toward
the memorial," noted Lair.
The D.A.V. is asking for the public's help to make sure that the
memorial is accurate. At the end of this story is a list of the names that
have been compiled and Lair is asking that family members check to make sure
names and spellings are correct. Anyone who has a change or who needs more
information can contact Lair at (606) 348-4012.
