Schools release scores from No Child Left Behind

Monticello — Monticello Schools met all of its goals

Monticello Independent School received some good news with the recent

release of the 2008-2009 state assessment scores.

The school district met all of its goals as required by the No Child

Left Behind (NCLB) Act. In addition, the elementary school also met all

goals mandated in NCLB. The middle school and high school fell a little

short, meeting seven of 10 required goals.

"Overall, I am pleased with most of the results," said Monticello

Principal Johnny Chaplin. "I'm pleased that as a district we met all the

stipulations of No Child Left Behind. I'm proud of our elementary students

for meeting all of their goals. We fell a little short in a couple of areas

in the middle school and high school, but we are already taking steps to

improve our scores and performance. We are not facing any tier consequences,

and we still certainly want to achieve as high as we possibly can."

In the school assessment, which was completed last May, students were

tested in reading, math, science, social studies, and on-demand writing. In

addition, other areas such as graduation rates and drop-out rates are also

factored into the assessment.

"We are committed to always trying to improve our performance and, as a

result, also our test scores," stated Chaplin. "Our teachers and students

are working hard, and I believe that the strategies we are implementing will

continue to have a positive impact on not only our test scores, but also on

the quality of education at Monticello School."



Wayne Co. Schools met NCLB goals

Wayne County Schools student assessment results for the No Child Left

Behind (NCLB) Act and the Kentucky Core Content Test (KCCT) were among

schools across the state whose results were released by the Kentucky

Department of Education on September 23.

The Wayne County School District was pleased that they made their Annual

Yearly Progress (AYP). Wayne County met 100 percent of its target goals in

order to qualify as having made AYP. In addition, Wayne County was among the

60.2 percent, or 696 of Kentucky's 1,157 public schools, that made AYP in

the 2008-2009 school year.

During the KCCT 2008-2009 testing year, the annual measurable objective

for Wayne County students was for 60.86 percent of the students to perform

at the proficient or distinguished level in reading. According to the data,

Wayne County students exceeded that goal with 71.90 percent of the students

falling in the proficient or distinguished range in reading.

In math, the goals was for 49.73 percent of the students to fall in the

proficient or distinguished range. The data showed that 63.99 percent

reached proficiency or above in math.

AYP is the term used in NCLB to refer to the minimum improvement

required of each school and district over the course of one year. It is

measured by:

€ Measuring growth in the percentage of students scoring proficient or

above in reading and mathematics in grades three through eight, reading in

grade 10 and mathematics in grade 11.

€ Assessing improvement on the "other academic indicator."

€ Testing at least 95 percent of enrolled students and student

sub-populations of sufficient size.

There are major changes in the mandated assessment for Kentucky school

since the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS) was dropped by

the state's General Assembly last spring. So interpreting this round of

scores is not consistent or comparable to previous cycles. A newer version

based on more focused curriculum standards will not be ready until the

2011-2012 school year.
