Sescourka faces additional charges

Monticello — The inmate at the Wayne County Detention Center, who escaped on Monday,

October 12 and prompted a countywide manhunt that lasted more than eight

hours, is facing additional charges.

Jeremy Sescourka, 19, has been charged with escape first degree, assault

third degree, and promoting contraband.

Sescourka escaped from the Wayne County Detention Center at about 4:30

a.m. on October 12, after he and another inmate, Joe Cook, accessed the

control room. Jailer Ray Upchurch said the two followed another inmate, who

received routine medical attention every morning, out of the cell.

Sescourka grabbed Deputy Jailer Sherry Kelsay around the neck and

dragged her to the front of the facility where he threw her to the ground

and fled.

Kelsay sustained injuries in the incident and was treated and released

at the local hospital. Upchurch said that the deputy jailer has returned to

work this week.

Sescourka was taken into custody just after 1 p.m. on October 12, when

multiple law enforcement agencies located him along KY 90, east of

Monticello.

Upchurch expressed his appreciation to all the agencies and individuals

involved in the apprehension, including: the Wayne County Sheriff's Office,

the Monti-cello Police Department, Vehicle Enforcement, Ken-tucky State

Police, Depart-ment of Fish and Wildlife, a member of the Monticello Fire

Department, as well as other citizens.

"We couldn't have done this without everybody's help," stated Upchurch.

Cook has been additionally charged with promoting contraband, according

to the Monticello Police Depart-ment.

Sescourka and Cook have been placed in isolation, according to Upchurch.

They will remain in isolation and will be required to be in restraints when

leaving their cell.
