Wayne unemployment rate remains steady

Monticello Wayne County's unemployment rate remained steady from September to October, according to the latest figures from the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training.

The local jobless rate remained at 13.5 percent in October. In October 2008, Wayne County's unemployment rate was 8 percent.

The Lake Cumberland Area continues to have double digit unemployment.

The overall rate for October was 11.4 percent, which increased from 10.8 percent in September. In October 2008 the unemployment rate in the area was

6.9 percent.

Cumberland County had the highest rate in the 10-county area at 15.1 percent. Clinton County had the lowest rate at 9.8 percent.

Other area rates include: Adair County, 11.1 percent; Casey County, 10.1 percent; Green County, 12.6 percent; McCreary County, 13.3 percent; Pulaski County, 10.3 percent; Russell County, 13.3 percent; and Taylor County, 10.7 percent.

Fayette County recorded the lowest jobless rate in the state at 7.8 percent. It was followed by: Calloway County, 8 percent; Boyd County, 8.4 percent; Jessamine, Madison, Oldham, Rowan and Scott counties, 8.8 percent each and Daviess and Woodford counties, 8.9 percent each.

Magoffin County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate at 21.7 percent. It was followed by: Jackson County, 17.5 percent; Powell County,

17.1 percent; Grayson County, 16.5 percent; and Metcalfe County, 15.8 percent.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
