South Kentucky RECC warns customers of scam

6-4-2014 —     South Kentucky RECC officials are warning members of scam artists who are posing as employees of the electric cooperative. SKRECC first learned of the scam on Friday, May 30 when a member came to the co-op office in Somerset saying she had received a phone call from someone claiming to be from South Kentucky RECC. The "representative" then told her that her bill was due, and they needed her debit card number.

SKRECC Vice President of Member Services and Public Relations Ruby Patterson said if there is ever an issue with a person's bill, the company would use an automated phone call, but adds that SKRECC does not call people to tell them their bill is due.

"The only time an automated call is made is when people are about to be disconnected, and this is only done after business hours. During the course of this call, they are given the option to pay their bill, but it is electronically. Members are not giving their account information to a live individual. And, we couldn't possibly call our more than 66,000 members personally to tell them their bill is due and ask for payment by phone."

Patterson urges members to never give out financial or personal information to anyone that calls them and claims to be from the co-op. If members initiate the call to South Kentucky RECC to pay their bill or for some other business transaction, then she says it is safe to tell employees such information.

Patterson also says employees and contractors from South Kentucky RECC that are working in communities or at your home should be in company vehicles, or vehicles marked as contractors, and have an identification badge.

If they do not, you're asked to call your county's sheriff

department or the local South Kentucky RECC office.

In addition, if you have caller I.D. on your phone, please write down the phone number that contacted you.

In many cases, officers can search the number out to see if it has been reported as a scam.
