Fire damages County Attorney’s office building

5-28-2014 —    A fire that caused significant damage to the Wayne County Attorney’s Office on Columbia Avenue on Thursday, May 22 is under investigation by the Kentucky State Police Arson Unit.

According to Monticello Fire Chief Steve Ferrell, the fire was reported at approximately 4:30 a.m.

The office building sustained heavy smoke and heat damage, according to Ferrell.

The fire department remained on the scene for several hours, and Kentucky State Police and the Fire Marshal’s Office joined them on the scene on Thursday.

County Attorney Tom Simmons was notified of the fire at around 4:30 a.m. and was on the scene with firefighters Thursday morning. He said calls to his office were being forward to other locations at that point until the office could find a new location.

“It’s a set back, but it won’t stop us from prosecuting cases,” said Simmons.

Simmons said there was some damage to files in his office, but copies of the files are also located in the Circuit Clerk’s Office.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire. Kentucky State Police will head up the investigation which is continuing.
