Cardinals defeat Trojans 82-60

Monticello Monticello hosted Wayne County in a district matchup on Friday, December 18. The Trojans entered the contest with a 2-6 mark, and were coming off a win over Red Bird earlier in the week. The Cards were 3-3 on the season, and had suffered back-to-back district losses to Southwestern and McCreary Central.

The Cardinals shot 56 percent from the field and took an 82-60 win over the Trojans on Friday night.

"We really played hard and it was nice to win," said Wayne County coach Rodney Woods.

Wayne County led 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. The Cards outscored the Trojans 23-13 in the second quarter to lead 42-28 at the half.

Wayne County's offense continued to flourish in the third quarter as they pushed out to a 62-45 lead on their way to the win.

The Trojans were led by the game-high 39 points of senior guard Derrick Peyton.

For the game, Monticello hit 21 of 53 from the field for 39 percent.

They were 4 of 16 from beyond the arc for 25 percent and 14 of 16 from the free throw line for 87 percent.

The Cardinals were led by junior forward Gavin Dunagan with 23 points.

Dunagan surpassed the 1,700 point total in his career.

Juniors Ryan Hopper and Austin Shearer added 15 points each. Shearer had 10 rebounds to lead the Cards on the boards. Hopper had 4 steals and 7 assists in the game.

Wayne County connected on 28 of 50 from the field for 56 percent. They were 6 of 12 on 3-pointers for 50 percent. From the free throw line, the Cards were 20 of 30 for 66 percent.

The Cardinals had 35 rebounds in the game, while the Trojans had 24.

Wayne County committed 24 turnovers compared to 28 for the Trojans.

Next up for the Trojans was a Monday game in their Holiday All A Classic.

The Cards were scheduled to play Oldham County on Sunday in the McCreary Central Arby's Classic Tournament.
