Judge Wilson recuses himself from Barnes hearing

Circuit Judge Robert L. Wilson recused himself from a bond hearing for Beckham B. Barnes, a Russell County man who was recently granted a new trial by the Kentucky Supreme Court. Barnes, who was convicted of murder by a local jury, and his father Wilbur Barnes, who has been charged with first degree wanton endangerment in an unrelated case, were both scheduled to appear before Wilson on Tuesday, January 14.

Just before the hearings began Wilson recused himself as judge, noting that he could render a fair and just decision in both cases, but felt he should step aside since he had previously represented the elder Barnes.

Both hearings were postponed until a new judge can be appointed. Beckham Barnes has been returned to the local detention center, awaiting trial.

He is accused of killing Troy Miller, a former business associate, in a highly publicized Russell County case. The trial was moved to Wayne County, where a jury found Barnes guilty.
