Board hears report about CATS scores

By MELODIE PHELPS

News Editor

Student achievement was the focus of Monday night’s meeting of the Wayne County Board of Education. With walls filled with examples of the work that is going on inside the classrooms in the district, board members discussed recent test scores.

Wayne Roberts presented board members with CATS results from each of the schools. Four of the five schools in the Wayne County district scored in the rewards category. A.J. Lloyd Middle School scored in the progressing category.

Because of the exceptional scores in the recent CATS testing, the school board received a special presentation from the Kentucky School Board Association. The letter noted that Wayne County scored among the top 1/3 of school districts in the state and commended the efforts of teachers, administrators, the superintendent and the Board of Education.

Dalton presented each board member with a framed copy of the message.

Also Monday, board members reviewed fall CTBS scores, which reflected increases at all levels except two. Roberts said the scores reflected "positive results."

Dalton pointed out that the fall CTBS, which is funded by the board each year, gives educators a unique look at students early in the school year. Those results give teachers and administrators an idea what areas they need to work in this school year, and those results can be compared to the results from the mandated CTBS assessment which is conducted in the spring.

Teachers spent Monday reviewing those fall CTBS scores, as part of a in-service training day.

In other action Monday, the board:

•Heard a report on the annual audit by Janet Gregory, CPA. Gregory reviewed the different

funds and noted that the district ended the school year with a fund balance of $488,174, which is a little over four percent contingency.

•Awarded the bid for the roof renovation projects at Turner Intermediate and the Area Technology Center. The project is funded through a federal renovation grant. The total bid came in about $16,000 lower than estimated, according to Dalton.

•Approved a memorandum of agreement with the Lake Cumberland District Health Department for the use of the Wayne County High School gymnasium in the event of an emergency.

•Agreed to advertise for proposals for performance contracting services.

•Approved a request by the Wayne County Extension Homemakers to use the high school cafeteria for an alternative location for Christmas Village.

•Approved a request for use of the A.J. Lloyd Middle School gymnasium for the Miss Monticello Pageant.
