Homestead exemption available at PVA office The Kentucky Constitution provides for a homestead exemption for homeowners that are at least 65 years of age, according to a press release issued by Property Valuation Administrator Bobby Upchurch. The exemption amount is $28,000 for 2003 and 2004 assessment years and this exemption is applied against the assessed value of the property that is owned and used as the taxpayer’s personal residence. The homestead exemption is also authorized for all homeowners who have been classified as totally disabled and who are receiving disability payments, according to Upchurch. A disability exemption can be granted to a homeowner who has been classified as totally disabled by any retirement system, either public or private, within or outside of Kentucky. Anyone who may qualify for this should contact Upchurch in the PVA’s office, located in the Wayne County Courthouse, or call (606) 348-6621. To receive the disability exemption for the 2002 tax year, the application must be filed with the PVA office by December 30. PVA office hours are from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday.
