Voter registration deadline

Anyone who wants to vote in the May 28 primary election must register by close of business on Monday, April 29. The County Court Clerk’s Office will accept voter registration cards until close of business that day. Any address changes that voters need to make must also be done by April 29, according to the County Court Clerk’s Office. Voters who have moved must make address changes by this time to be eligible to vote in the primary election.

Anyone with voting related questions should contact the Clerk’s Office at 348-6661.

50s celebration is May 25

A 50s Celebration is set for May 25 in downtown Monticello, and organizers are currently planning a variety of events. This marks the second year for the downtown celebration. There will be something for everyone at this year’s celebration—from antique cars, to favorite foods, to live music and special contests.

A group of musicians are scheduled to perform 50s and 60s music live during the celebration. Antique and classic cars will be on display around the square area. Anyone who is interested in bringing an antique car to the celebration should call 348-0167 or 348-3064.

Members of the local motorcycle Cruiser Riders group will have motorcycles at the festival, according to organizers. Contests will include a Best Dressed event, so it’s time to get costumes ready. There will be a clown as well. The rain date has been set for June 1.

Cornbread Festival planned

The Monticello Woman’s Club will sponsor the annual Cornbread Festival Saturday, May 25 at Mill Springs. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Pinto beans and cornbread are the main items on the menu for the festival. Alternate items include hot dogs and chips. Cost is $3.50 for adults and $2 for children.

The mill will be open for tours with a meal grinding exhibition at 2 p.m. The gift shop will be open from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. There will be vendors and arts and crafts on exhibit.

National Day of Prayer set

A National Day of Prayer will be observed Thursday, May 2. This year the Wayne County Association of Ministers and Churches will sponsor a Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Cumberland Dairy Restaurant for anyone wishing to participate.

Following the breakfast, there will be a prayer walk around the city. This prayer walk, which has become an annual event, will start from the Cumberland Dairy at about 8:30 a.m. Everyone in the community is invited to walk and pray.
