Cumberland Farm Products receives state funding

Cumberland Farm Products Association, Inc. has received $301,959 in state Agricultural Development funds, according to information released by the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board. The money is a forgivable loan to purchase the satellite facility and property in Russell County. It will be used to update computer equipment and to expand the current cooling system at the Monticello facility.

Wayne County was one of a number of counties included in funding for County Hay, Straw and Commodity Storage Programs. Wayne County was awarded $30,000 in diversification funds for that program. At their March board meeting, the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board approved more than $2.8 million in diversification projects around the state.

Second annual Kentucky Special Olympics Torch Run

The Monticello Police Department will conduct its Second Annual Kentucky Special Olympics Torch Run on May 17 at noon. The run will begin on KY 90 north of the city limits and will end on KY 90 south of town.

"This is not a race," said Officer Sheridan Wright, who has organized the Torch Run for the local department. "It’s our community and law enforcement supporting a great cause." T-shirts for the run will be on sale at Wal-Mart again this year. Officers will set up a booth outside the store on May 3 and May 10, and t-shirts may be purchased from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. both days. T-shirts are also available at the police station.

All proceeds go directly to the Kentucky Special Olympics. Last year, the Monticello Police Department raised $2,600 and received the "New Hero" award, raising more money than any department this size in the state. For more information about the Torch Run, call the Monticello Police Department at (606) 348-9313.

Monticello School will hold classes Friday, May 2
