Shelton files for Sheriff as an independent candidate

An independent candidate has filed for the office of Wayne County Sheriff, according to County Court Clerk Carol Jones. Homer Shelton filed his intentions to seek the office last week.

Shelton’s name will not appear on the primary ballot, since he is a registered independent. Four republican candidates and three democratic candidates will be on the May primary ballot for sheriff.

Registered independents who wish to seek a local office this fall have until August 13 at 4 p.m. to file as candidates. This is also the deadline for candidates in non-partisan races that will appear on the November general election ballot, including city council, local school boards, and mayor.

Jones noted that her office is currently accepting applications for elderly or disabled voters who need to vote by the traditional paper absentee ballot. So far, the clerk’s office has mailed 52 absentee ballot forms. Voters who will be out of town on election day can vote on the absentee machine, which will be set up in Jones’ office in the next few days. Anyone with election related questions may contact the clerk’s office at (606) 348-6661.
