Officials continue to prepare for May 28 primary election

Officials continue to prepare for the May 28 primary election. The election school for training of election precinct officers will be held Thursday, May 23 at 6 p.m. in the circuit courtroom on the second floor of the courthouse.

Also, the local Board of Election Commissioners will check the voting machines Thursday, May 23 at 9 a.m. in the basement of City Hall on South Main Street.

County Court Clerk Carol Jones noted that the absentee voting machine is currently open in her office, and anyone who will be out of town on election day may stop by and cast their vote. The machine will remain open during regular office hours through Saturday, May 25.

Residents who are elderly or are sick and cannot get to the polls to vote may cast a paper absentee ballot. Jones said so far 110 people have applied for the traditional absentee ballot. She noted that applications must be received by Tuesday, May 21.

Anyone with election related questions may call Jones’ office at (606) 348-6661.

Williams, Freeman speak at Chamber lunch Thursday

The two republican candidates running for state senator in this district—incumbent David L. Williams of Burkesville and Brien Freeman of Corbin—will be the featured speakers at the monthly Monticello-Wayne County Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

The event will be held Thursday, May 16 at noon at Memorial Park. Food will be catered in for the event, and tickets must be purchased in advance from the Chamber of Commerce.

Gary Dick, president of the Chamber of Commerce, noted that the chamber board is pleased to offer this opportunity for the community. He noted this will be a good chance for citizens to understand each candidate’s platform, as well as the important issues in this race.

This is the only scheduled event with both candidates in attendance before the May 28 primary election. The race will be decided by the primary results, since there are no democratic candidates running for the office.

Time will be allotted for questions and answers with each candidate. For more information or to purchase a ticket, contact the Chamber office at (606) 348-3064.
