Cumberland Farm Products receives money for project

The Kentucky Agricultural Development Board has delivered a check in the amount of $20,000 in support of the Cumberland Farm Products expansion project. This is the first installment of funds to the co-op project, which was approved for funding at the April 2002 Agricultural Development Board meeting.

Cumberland Farm Products received state Ag Development funds as a forgivable loan to purchase the satellite facility and property in Russell County from the city of Russell Springs. Currently, 72 percent of Cumberland Farm Product’s producers market their products through the Russell Springs facility, which accounts for 55 percent of their total acreage. This purchase will ensure that Cumberland Farm Products can continue to meet the producer demand in this area.

The funds will be utilized to update computer equipment at both the Monticello and Russell Springs facilities, and to expand the current cooling system at the Monticello facility. The upgrade of computer equipment and software will allow the two facilities to be networked electronically, increasing business efficiency and communication between staff. The cooling expansion will enable Cumberland Farm Products to market a larger acreage of vegetables, mainly cabbage and tomatoes, through this plant.

Rescue Squad searches for McCreary County children

The Wayne County Rescue Squad was called in last Wednesday morning to assist with the search for five McCreary County children, who were apparently lost in the woods after a fishing expedition.

According to Rescue Squad Captain David Frost, five children ranging in age from 11 to 15 had apparently gone fishing at a pond at about 5 p.m. Tuesday. They were supposed to return before dark, but the search began when they failed to come home.

Frost said the local squad was called into the search at about 4:50 a.m. Wednesday, and 13 members from Wayne County responded to the area. The children had apparently spent the night under a cliff and were found at about 9 a.m. Wednesday. He said no one was injured.
