Regional competition WCHS cheerleading squad wins first place

Monticello — First-year Wayne County cheerleading coach Hannah Roberts knew her 19-member squad had a championship performance in them.

On Saturday the Wayne County cheerleaders proved it, as they claimed the first place trophy in the 2 1/2 minute Large Co-Ed division at the 12th Region competition at Mercer County High School.

"It was really exciting," said Roberts. "I knew they were good, but I was really surprised Saturday. They really stepped it up."

Roberts said the routine, which includes dance and cheer elements, is something they have been working on since attending camp in June.

"We had been kind of rocky the last couple of weeks, then last week it all came together (in practice)," said Roberts.

It's a routine that local basketball fans have seen during some recent games at Wayne County and they will likely see it again before the cheerleaders perform at the state competition next month.

The Wayne County cheerleaders will be among 16 squads from across the state who will compete in the 2 1/2 minute Large Co-Ed division at the state competition on February 14 at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green.

"We'll have to pick up the pace before state competition," said Roberts.
