Wayne Detention Center participates in AFIS Bytes fingerprint program Wayne County Outlook
Monticello — The Wayne County Detention Center fingerprinted 932 people who came
through the facility in 2008, as part of the Kentucky State Police AFIS
Bytes program.
For the past couple of years, jails across the state have fingerprinted
those who are being booked in for latent reverse search identifications.
A reverse search is when a set of prints from a jail is submitted and
compared to the state's unsolved fingerprint data base.
These fingerprints have been recovered from crime scenes all across the
state.
While Wayne County did not have any reverse search matches last year,
across the state there was a total of 302.
This solved the following number of crimes: homicide, 6; robbery, 29;
sex offenses, 4; burglary, 92; narcotics, 6; fraud/forgery 9; theft, 23;
personal identification, 121; and miscellaneous, 12.
"The fingerprints are checked against cold cases, once they are entered
into this data base," said Wayne County Jailer Ray Upchurch. "We didn't have
any hits here in Wayne County last year. It takes a little extra time to do
fingerprinting, but if we can help solve one cold case, it's worth it," he
added.
He noted that this program is an asset to law enforcement at the county
level, as well as the state level.
