Local Farmers' Market will be opening soon Wayne County Outlook
Monticello — The Monticello-Wayne County Farmers' Market is preparing for its third
season of operation after a very successful year in 2008. The market, which
opens Saturdays at 8 a.m. in the Wayne County Judicial Center Parking Lot,
just off Columbia Avenue, will also open on Tuesdays, at 4 p.m., at the
Cooperative Extension Office, near the basement entrance.
Plans are to be open near the end of June and stay open as long as the
demand and produce allow.
The market featured over 20 different local producers throughout the
season, with as many as 10 farmers showing up on Saturdays. The market
features farm fresh locally grown tomatoes, green beans, peppers, cucumbers,
sweet corn, apples, melons, and cantaloupes, plus fresh cut flowers, honey,
and products like jams, jellies, salsa and so much more.
"We continue to support the Wayne County Farmers' Market and want to
help our farmers anyway we can. The market allows the opportunity for the
consumer to meet face to face with the producer and hopefully establish a
relationship that helps both parties. We've helped with signs, advertising
dollars, and flyers in the past and hope people enjoy the new benches we've
added for 2009," said County Judge-Executive Greg Rankin.
The local market plans to open later this month. For more information on
the market or to obtain a membership feel free to call the Cooperative
Extension office at 348-8453, or Community Development at 348-4241.
