11-24-10 —     The Wayne County Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, November 15 and approved the audit report for 2009-2010, which was presented by Barry Daulton, CPA.

Daulton said the district received the highest audit opinion available. He commended school officials for the hard work they have put in the last couple of years to turn around the difficult financial situation they were in. "I commend you for that," stated Daulton.

Also during the meeting, board members learned more about a text alert system that was just unveiled that day. Students, staff, parents and others can sign up through the district's website and they will receive important messages on their cell phone regarding school.

Superintendent John Dalton noted that the district's technology staff had worked for quite some time on coming up with system, linking it to the website so there would be no additional cost to launch the service. He noted that the text alert will be used only for weather-related school information or in the case of an emergency.

The service had been unveiled that afternoon and by the time the board met that evening almost 100 people had already signed up for the service. Dalton noted that anyone interested can also sign up for e-mail alerts.

Anyone who wants to sign up can visit the district's website at www.wayne.kyschools.us and click on the text alert icon. The wireless number and the service provider is required to sign up.

The service is available through the following carriers: AT&T, Nextel, Sprint, Verizon, and Bluegrass Cellular.

Wayne County Schools does not charge anyone who participates, but standard test messaging rates may apply.

Last week's meeting was hosted by the Wayne County Early Childhood Center, where members had an opportunity to visit classrooms and learn more about what preschoolers have been learning.

In other action during the meeting, the board:

    • Approved the 2010 KETS technology activity report.

    • Agreed to change December's board meeting to Thursday, December 16.

    • Met in executive session to discuss pending litigation.
