10-13-10 —     Monticello City Council met in regular session on Monday evening and set the date and times for the local observance of trick-or-treat.

Since Halloween falls on Sunday this year, the council set Saturday, October 30 as the night for trick-or-treat. Hours will remain the same as in recent years, from 5 until 8 p.m.

Also during Monday's meeting, the council heard a request from several residents on the Bob Shelton Road who would like to have city water service. A spokesperson for the residents noted that everyone around them in the Missouri Hollow area has city water service and they are approximately 300 feet from the last customer on the line.

There are five families who live on that road.

Monticello Mayor Kenneth Catron said he would discuss the request with Monticello Utility Commission Manager Gene Jones.

Councilman Phillip Duncan had some questions about the city's curfew ordinance and its enforcement recently. He noted that there seems to be a lot of people out late in the downtown area.

Monticello Police Chief Ralph Miniard said the city has a new officer joining the police department on October 21, which should allow them more of an opportunity to get an officer out on foot in the downtown area at night.

Catron reported to the council regarding the recent downtown celebration, which he said was a success.

Catron also noted that the city has received word that a $350,000 state highway department grant, designated for a special project, has been approved. But no other details can be released at this time. He said further details will be released by state officials soon.

    The council also:

    • Agreed to replace the stop sign, which is down, on the corner of Boone Street and Stokes Street.
