8-11-10 — Saturday is a great opportunity for families to enjoy many activities,
like a movie, a tasty sandwich, a game of cornhole and a ride on the fire
truck. And it's also a great opportunity to support Monticello-Wayne County
Memorial Park.
The Fourth Annual Kiwanis Family Fun Night is set for Saturday and those
who've attended in the past will find a lot of their favorite events, as
well as a few new ones to enjoy.
This year's event has been expanded to include a movie at the Wayne
Theater, which basically kicks off Family Fun Night. The animated movie,
featuring Woody, Buzz Lightyear and all their pals, is slated to begin at 4
p.m. at the historic downtown theater. Admission is $5 and includes popcorn
and a drink.
Then, the games will begin at 6 p.m. at Memorial Park. Things like the
Mini Olympics, golf, and the football throw will be going on, and there will
be delicious smells from the grill as tenderloin, chicken, burgers and hot
dogs are prepared.
Also new this year is the dunking machine, which will feature political
candidates.
Live entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. and at 8 p.m. Wayne County Idol
will get underway. Klassyc Tymes will provide the music for the competition.
Wayne County Idol will be a little different this year, noted Gary Dick
with the Kiwanis Club. In years past, the contestant who received the most
money won the event, but this year it will be by votes.
Reigning "Idol" winner David Upchurch, who is the park director, will
not compete this year, but he will perform a set for the audience.
Scheduled performers for Wayne County Idol are: Peggy Bertram, Patti
Corder, Jarrod Duncan, Ashley Foster, Gabe Heatherly, Micah Hicks, Mary
Huffaker, Lana McGinnis, Wanetta Morrow, Stephanie Payne, Jamie Reagan, and
Wade Upchurch.
Family Fun Night was founded by the Kiwanis Club as a way to help
Memorial Park continue to provide its services to local residents. Admission
to the event is free, but donations will be accepted at the gate. All
proceeds are donated to the park.
"It's grown every year," said Dick, as he talked about the annual event.
