Fiscal Court approves resolution authorizing application for grant

Melodie Phelps, News Editor

Monticello — The Wayne County Fiscal Court has approved a resolution authorizing an

application for a Land and Water Conservation Grant for Monticello-Wayne

County Memorial Park. The action was taken during the court's regular

monthly meeting on Thursday, March 11.

The grant, if received, would be used to replace the roofs on the

shelter houses at the park, as well as for construction of a miniature golf

course.

Wayne County Judge-Executive Greg Rankin noted that the county applied

for this grant last year, but it was not funded. The total project is

$36,000 and it requires a 50 percent match.

The county will use in-kind labor for their half of the project.

The court will consider donating additional funds to the Wayne County

Rescue Squad, after they review the budget. Wayne County Rescue Squad

Captain David Frost addressed the court on the need for more money, noting

that the squad is facing a large insurance bill that would deplete most of

their funds.

Frost said that donations are down about 30 percent, which has made it

difficult for the squad. After making the insurance payment, Frost said the

squad had only enough money to operate about a month and a half before they

were broke.

He asked for an additional $10,000 donation, but noted that the squad

appreciates any help the county can provide. Magistrates agreed that they

would help the squad but opted to take a look at the current year's budget

before making a specific commitment.

In other action, the court:

€ Approved the county road aid cooperative agreement, which is done

annually so the county can receive road aid money for the next fiscal year.

€ Heard a monthly report from Jailer Ray Upchurch who noted that the

total population at the Detention Center is 174, which includes 79 county

inmates and 95 state inmates. The county has billed a total of $88,581.80

for housing inmates during the month of February.

€ Heard a monthly report from Solid Waste Coordinator Tim Bell, who

noted that white goods have been collected at 45 households during the past

month, bringing the total for the year to 92. Sale of recyclable items in

February brought $3,743. Bell noted that the tire amnesty collection drive

has been changed to June 10-12 in Wayne County. Tires can be taken to the

state highway garage and disposed of free of charge during this time.

€ Heard a monthly report from EMS Director Bubby Corder who noted that

since January 1 the ambulance service has answered 576 calls. Corder noted

that Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital has donated Wayne County EMS three

new cardiac monitors that will transmit the EKG of a patient directly to the

hospital.

€ Agreed to advertise for the adoption of Summer Shade Lane into the

county road system.
