11-24-10 —     The fiscal court will donate $12,500 to the Susie Fire Department, which will be used to help the rural fire department purchase a truck. Magistrates agreed to make the donation on Friday, November 12, after Kelly Ragan with the Susie Fire Department spoke to the court about the need for another truck.

Ragan said that the Susie Fire Department is looking to replace the

1982 truck that is currently in their fleet with a newer model. They have found two possibilities. One will cost $39,000 and the other will cost $45,000.

Ragan said the fire department has an established line of credit which can be used for the purchase. He noted that members of the fire department's board of directors will have the opportunity to take a look at both the fire trucks before making a final decision about which one to purchase.

Following Ragan's presentation to the court, District Two Magistrate Jeffrey Dishman asked about the amount of funds the county has set aside for fire protection. County Judge-Executive Greg Rankin noted that there is about $14,000 to $15,000 set aside for repairs and other expenses above and beyond what the county pays the city each year for rural fire protection.

When the Susie Fire Department makes the purchase of the additional truck, they will donate the 1982 model in their fleet to the Parnell Fire Department, according to Ragan.

In other action during the meeting, the court approved a resolution regarding the Marketplace Project, which is the Farmers Market building that will be located on South Main Street.

The resolution is related to an environmental review which has been conducted on the property where the building will be constructed. It is a routine part of the paperwork associated with this type of project.

    In other action, the court:

    • Approved an amendment to the current fiscal year budget.

    • Approved the adoption of Shade Tree Lane into the county road system.

    • Approved the appointments of Karen Phillips and Rick Massengale to the Wayne County Public Library Board. Both are four year terms.

    • Agreed to advertise to take Brideman Hill into the county road system.

    • Heard a monthly report from Jailer Ray Upchurch who noted that total population at the Detention Center is 201, including 98 state inmates and 103 county inmates. For the month of October, the county has billed a total of $89,099.94 for housing inmates.

    • Heard a monthly report from Solid Waste Coordinator Tim Bell who noted that white goods were collected at 61 households last month bringing the total for the year top 858. Recyclable sales for the month of October totaled $5,405.06, bringing the total so far this year to $46,209.

    • Heard a monthly report from EMS Director Bubby Corder who noted that the ambulance service has answered 2,840 calls since January 1.

For the month of October they responded to 284 calls.
