Cardinals end regular season at Clinton County in "Border Battle"

10-20-10 — The Wayne County Cardinals, 4-5 on the season and coming off a 44-13

district win at Taylor County, wrap up the regular season this Friday

night, at Clinton County. The Bulldogs are 0-9 on the season and

coming off a 46-6 home loss to Campbellsville. The contest marks the

7th meeting between the two border rivals, with the Cards winning the

previous six, including a 52-0 decision at Jewell Field in 2009.

Wayne County has locked up a state playoff appearance and already,

knows their opponent is Breathitt County, but the Cards have much to

play for in the regular season finale.

"We certainly want to win four of our last games and go into the

post season with a .500 record. We respect Clinton County and

watching them on film and in person, their kids play hard, so we'll

have to show up ready to battle," said Cards head coach Shawn Thompson.

The Cards are averaging 28.5 points per game on offense led by

senior running back Devin Sloan. Sloan has 830 rushing yards, on 123

attempts with 7 touchdowns, while fellow senior Travis Pace has 336

rushing yards and 4 scores.

"Our running game, with the exception of the Somerset game has been

pretty decent. Devin for a first year senior has played extremely

well and Travis continues to make plays both running and catching the

football," said Thompson.

Junior quarterback Shawn Dishman leads the team with 8 rushing

touchdowns and has 297 yards, on 136 attempts. Dishman has made

improvement in the passing game and has completed 47 of 99 attempts

for 607 yards with 4 touchdowns, against 7 interceptions.

Kyle Gehring has been the leading receiver with 16 catches for 228

yards and 3 touchdowns.

"We are in the final week of the regular season and all season its

been a real struggle to actually have all 11 offensive starters on

the field. We've lost a bunch of snaps to injury, so hopefully we can

play well at Clinton County and leave the game, healthy," said Thompson.

The Cards offense should have a chance to fire on all cylinders this

week, as the Bulldogs allow 39 points per game.

"We're still shooting to put together four complete quarters of

football. Offensively we have to play clean from penalties and as

always take care of the football, when we do that we have potential

to be pretty good," said Thompson.

Clinton County, at 0-9 is one of 13 winless teams left in the state,

but has had chances. The squad opened the season with an 8-6 loss at

Berea and four weeks later lost in double-overtime to Caverna 26-20.

"Confidence is a funny thing, I know with our team a few plays here

or there we could be looking at another couple of wins. Clinton

County is in a four-team district so I know just like us they want to

enter the post season on a high note," said Thompson.

The Bulldogs, under the second year direction of head coach Jamie

Miller, average 10.6 points per outing and face a Cardinal defense

that allows 30 points per game.

"The big play has killed us all year. We swarm the ball pretty well,

but a blown assignment and we just don't have the speed to correct

our mistake. Speed can cover up a lot of miscues," said Thompson.

Wayne County knows a road trip to Breathitt County is up next, could

the Cards be looking ahead?

"I certainly hope not. We respect Clinton County and know with our

border rivals it will be a battle, so our intensity has to be there

from the opening whistle. Our focus is on Clinton County and getting

our record to 5-5," said Thompson.

Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Friday night, at Clinton County High

School's Bulldog field.
