Middle School Cards lose at Southern, drops to 5-4

CNHI

9-29-10 —     The Wayne County Middle School Cardinals traveled to Big South Fork

conference for Southern, last Thursday night for 7th and 8th grade

games. The Cards 8th grade unit was looking for a win to force a 3-

way tie for the top spot in the conference, while the 7th grade

needed to win to claim a spot in the title game with Pulaski Northern.

Southern dominated both sides of the ball and cruised to a 30-0

shutout win, in the 7th grade match up. "Southern has a tremendous

7th grade team, but we didn't play like a team that wanted to advance

to the championship playoff. We just didn't run, block or tackle very

well," said Wayne Middle coach Shannon Huthinson.

The 8th grade was also a lopsided contest, as the hosts built a 35-6

halftime advantage, en route to a 50-12 win. Southern, 11-1 on the

season, scored all seven times they had the ball and locked-up the

number one seed in playoffs.

Quarterback Logan Gardner scored both touchdowns for the Cards on

runs of 85 and 22 yards, while finishing with 145 yards on 11

attempts. Wayne County was plagued  by a season high 3 turnovers and

finished with just 165 yards of offense.

Linebacker Calvin Godsey totaled 4 tackles, as the defense struggled

throughout the night.

Wayne County,  now 5-4 on the season, travels to Pulaski Northern on

Tuesday night in an opening round match up in  the Big South Fork

Conference.

"We just have to go back to work on the fundamentals. We'll work on

blocking and tackling and get back after it," said Hutchinson.
