8-18-10 —    The Wayne County High School Volleyball Team will begin their season on a strong note having bonded together and strengthened their trust skills at the Team Leadership Center at an overnight retreat on August 2.

"The purpose of the retreat was to become closer as a team," said Head Coach Sandra Baker. This is her first year to lead the team and her second year to be affiliated with the increasingly popular local sport.

The group participated in team building activities under the direction of Norrie Wake. They enjoyed everything from the cow pasture game to the rock wall adventure to climbing the tower.  They spent the night at the lodge and enjoyed being matched up with big and little sisters.

"Everybody wanted to do the swing," Baker recalled. "They were hooked onto a cable and held onto a rope which was pulled by the remainder of the team, lifting them into the sky. Once they were lifted up and ready, they'd let go of the rope and swing."

"It was a big adrenalin rush. You had to have your teammates help you get up or you couldn't have done it. There wasn't anything you could do there by yourself," explained Coach Baker.

For instance, in order to climb the tower, the climber depended on the belayer and the belayer depended on the monitor. It was truly about having your back side covered which helped build trust amongst the volleyball players.

The team has begun practicing for the fall season and has already participated in a scrimmage. Their first competitive match up was at Clinton County on Tuesday, August 10. Their next game is this Thursday, August 12 at Casey County.
