Monticello — Devon Allman, son of iconic singer/songwriter Gregg Allman of the
legendary Allman Brothers Band, will help kick off the Lake Cumberland Grand
Prix 2010 on June 4 in Somerset by adding a helping of electrified southern
rock and blues to a stellar lineup of entertainment, parties, and special
events planned for race weekend as Offshore Super Series (OSS) powerboat
racing returns to Lake Cumberland.
Blending the soulful vocal style of his father with masterful guitar
reminiscent of his uncle, Duane Allman, Devon Allman and his power trio,
Honeytribe, will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. at Race Village at The
Center for Rural Development, located at Traffic Light 15 just north of the
race site at Waitsboro Recreation Area.
"We are very excited to have Devon Allman's Honeytribe performing live
at The Center for Rural Development," Laura Glover, director of sales and
events for The Center, said. "It's a great concert that will help launch
three days of racing excitement at Race Village and the race site as the
Lake Cumberland Grand Prix takes over Somerset."
Inspired by music of the Rolling Stones, the Doors, and‹of course‹the
Allman Brothers Band, Devon brought together drummer Mark Oyarzabal and
George Potsos on bass to form a powerful trio of musicians and their own
unique bluesy, rock and roll sound in the Honeytribe.
The band headed back to the studio earlier this year to record its
second and newest release, "Space Age Blues."
"We hope to see you here for a fun-filled night of entertainment you
won't want to miss," Glover said.
At Race Village, The Center will be the site for a host of activities
leading up to the qualifying heats and Pro-Am racing on June 5 and Lake
Cumberland Grand Prix race on June 6. It will also be the site of the
closing ceremonies and awards presentation at the conclusion of the final
races. Fans will also be able to meet race teams and see the powerboats up
close from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. on the June 4 kickoff day at Race Village.
In addition to the free Honeytribe performance at 7 p.m., Friday's
opening day for Race Village will also feature a "Parade of Boats" from 6-7
p.m., during which the race teams and their powerboats will be on full
display as they head north up U.S. 27 in Somerset from The Center and back
again.
The race, to be held at Waitsboro Recreation Area‹located off U.S. 27 in
Somerset just past Traffic Light 29‹will feature a challenging nine-turn
course and more than 20 boats capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 miles
per hour.
As preparations continue, the race effort is actively seeking volunteers
from across the region who are willing to roll up their sleeves, pitch in,
and help with nearly every aspect of the event.
Whether those duties include helping keep boats out of the way during
race time on the water or simply helping with the parking of cars at
designated areas, hundreds of volunteers are being sought to assist with the
massive effort.
Volunteers and vendors are encouraged to visit the 2010 Lake Cumberland
Grand Prix Web site at www.lakecumberlandgrandprix.com to fill out online
participation forms, or contact the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of
Commerce at 606-679-7323 to sign up for service opportunities and register
