Monticello — The Monticello Mets, a Summer League baseball travel team consisting of
several students from Monticello School, has had a very successful season.
With a record of eight wins, seven losses and one tie, the Mets have proven
to be a talented team.
However, the Mets are also a unique and diverse team. Consisting of high
school students, middle school students, boys, girls, brothers and sisters,
the Monticello Mets certainly don't fit the image of a traditional AAU
baseball team.
One of the unique qualities of the Mets team lies in the fact that it
features two brother/sister combinations: Adrienne and Adam Coffey and
Matthew and Sara Miller. Adam Coffey pitches, catches, and plays shortstop
while his sister Adrienne plays third base. In addition, Matthew Miller
plays centerfield and sometimes shares shortstop duties with his sister,
Sara.
The team also has many other talented players. One of the most versatile
players is Matthew Shearer, the senior lead-off batter and catcher who can
fill any position needed.
Other pitchers and catchers include Jacob Wallace, Trajan Smith, Brandon
Bratcher, John Mann, Nicky McClellan, and Nick Keene. Wallace and Smith also
sometimes play second and third base while Mann and McClellan also play
outfield.
The Mets also have a full roster of fielders.
These include: Gabe Denney-first base, Aaron Crabtree-second base, Zach
Massengale-second base/ outfield, Joe Barrier-second base, Austin
East-outfield, Dustin Coffey-first base/outfield, Michael Anderson-outfield,
Brandon McClellan-outfield, and Jared Futrell-outfield. Tim Tucker did not
get to play this season due to injury.
The Monticello Mets are coached by Harvey Smith, Chad Lair, and Kenny
Massengale.
