Monticello — The Wayne County baseball team is off to a hot start early in the 2010
season.
The Cardinals have piled up 4 straight wins and have been scoring lots
of runs in the process.
Wayne County started the season with a 4-3 road victory over Adair
County on Monday, March 22.
The Cards played their first home game the next night, and stunned the
visiting Cumberland County Panthers by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the
7th inning for a 9-8 comeback victory. Wayne County traveled to Mt. Vernon
on Saturday, March 27 to face the Rockets of Rockcastle County.
The Cardinals pounded out 10 hits in only 5 innings on their way to an
easy 19-6 win.
The Cardinals were on the road once again this past Tuesday as they took
on the Taylor County Cardinals in Campbellsville.
Wayne County got a very strong pitching performance from Sr. Tyler Joe
Dishman, and the offense was potent once again resulting in a 9-3 road win.
Wayne County's trio of seniors: Travis Bell, Chris Swift, and Tyler Joe
Dishman have led the team offensively in the early season. All three are
hitting over .400 and are also the leading run producers. More importantly,
with a starting line-up that includes two 8th graders and two freshmen, the
seniors have provided outstanding leadership.
The Cards hope to improve on last season's 16-12 record.
Replacing six seniors from the 2009 team has been no easy task, but the
results have been promising during the early part of this season.
The 2010 Cardinal team would like to invite everyone to come out and
catch a game at the Wayne County High School baseball field.
