John Harvey Kindred died at the age of 97, on March 27, 2010. He passed away on his birthday at Big Elm Nursing Center in Kannapolis, N.C. John was born on March 27, 1913, in Big Hill, Ky. near Berea. John was the last surviving of eight children born to John Harvey and Ella Margaret Kindred.
Married twice, his first wife was Marianne Ruch Kindred, the mother of his only child, Kay Kindred Lowe Bell of Mooresville, N.C. and his stepdaughter, Ann C. Dickerson McGranahan of Sun River, Ore. His second wife, Mary Brock Kindred, was beloved by his family. John proudly served his country during World War II in Europe. From his childhood in the hills of Kentucky, throughout his long life, John remained a skilled outdoorsman with a consuming passion for hunting and fishing. He had a particular love of coon dogs and coon hunting. He was an excellent bowler, a skilled machinist, tool and dye maker, plumber, mechanic, brick and concrete block layer, carpenter, painter and gardner. He could build or fix almost anything.
He was Christian, staunch republican and he idolized Ronald Reagan and George Bush, Sr. After retirement in Ohio, John moved to Lakeland, Fla. with his second wife, Mary. After her death, he went to live with his brother Fred in Kalamazoo, Mich. Eventually John and Fred moved back to their beloved Kentucky to be near their sister Ruth in Monticello. In his declining years at the age of 93, his daughter Kay brought him to live with her in Mooresville, N.C.
John is survived by his daughter-Kay Kindred Lowe Bell; step-daughter-Ann Caroline Dickerson McGranahan; grandchildren-Beth Lowe Nix, Shelley Lowe Joyner, Amy Lowe Williamson and Andrea Lowe Childers; great-grandchildren-Morgan Patricia Lowe, Austin Matthew Childers, Devin Ray Nix, Rachel Marie Nix, Kristin Kay Childers and William Travis Nix; great-great-grandchildren-Jason, Patrick and Jade Lowe; nephews-Buford Kindred and Fred Kindred; nieces-Connie Collins, Rona Randal and Joan Sowers and many other nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by a grandson-Patrick Devin Lowe; brothers-Asa Anderson Kindred, Stanley Kindred, Fred Kindred, Lonnie Oscar Kindred, Kenneth Tilman Kindred and Luther Kindred; sisters-Nora White, Verna Brock and Ruth Meade.
Bruial service was held at the Salisbury National Cemetery on Friday, April 2, 2010.
