Local Guard unit will be mobilized in November
Melodie Phelps

The local National Guard unit will be mobilized in November in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to information released last week by Major General Donald Storm, Adjutant General for Kentucky.

Battery C of the 1st Battalion, 623rd Field Artillery (MLRS) will mobilize November 17, according to Storm. The 94 guard unit members will report to Monticello, and will probably depart for their mobilization station at Fort Dix, New Jersey within a few days of their mobilization date.

The entire 1st Battalion, 623rd Field Artillery (MLRS) unit has been mobilized, according to Storm. This includes Headquarters Battery in Glasgow, which includes 116 soldiers, Battery A in Tompkinsville, which includes 107 soldiers, Battery B in Campbellsville, which includes 87 soldiers, and Battery C in Monticello.

For purposes of this mission, portions of the Headquarters Battery and Battery C will be merged respectively with Battery A and Battery B.

No further details about the length of the mobilization or the ultimate destination of Battery C have been made available. The local unit was alerted in June about possible duty in Iraq.

Battery C was last mobilized in March 2003, when they left Monticello for Fort Campbell. They remained on active duty at Fort Campbell until May 15, 2003.

Storm noted in a press release last week that the deployment of these units is part of the ongoing nationwide mobilization of Army and Air National Guard units in the global war on terrorism. Currently, there are 689 Kentucky Army and Air National Guard soldiers and airmen mobilized in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Noble Eagle, or participating in peacekeeping operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.
