Wayne County 8th graders win Kentucky Wesleyan tournament
Wayne County’s A.J. Lloyd Middle School Girls 8th Grade Basketball Team won the Kentucky Wesleyan Fall Hoop Fest Tournament held in Owensboro, Ky. over the weekend.
The girls brought home a huge purple trophy from the double elimination tournament. In the first game on Friday, the girls beat Edmonson County 57 to 17, followed by another win against Butler County with a score of 35 to 19. In the final tournament games, Wayne County beat Edmonson County again, 37 to 9. And in the final game they beat Butler County 39 to 18.
There were a total of six teams participating in the weekend event which included: Russellville Middle School, Monticello Middle School, Tell City Middle School, Butler County Middle School, Edmonson Middle School and A.J. Lloyd Middle School.
“We were really excited that Megan Latham received Most Valuable Player of the tournament,” said Coach Micah Hicks. “And Kayla Jones made All Tournament Team.”
Hicks attributed the girls’ wins to the fact that they are an “exceptional bunch of athletes for their age.”
The seasoned ball players have been together since fifth grade, so they have developed their skills by beginning early in their careers.
The 8th grade team includes: Rachel Coffey, Kayla Jones, Heather Stearns, Alainna Owens, Emilee Burton, and Megan Latham.
“They are really fun to watch,” said Principal Philip Bertram. “They have a lot of potential to go a long way if they stick with it and function as a unit. They are also excellent students, as well. They represent our school in a good way, making us extremely proud.”
