Cardinals travel to dangerous Casey Co.
The Wayne County Cardinals, 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in district play, resume district action this Friday night at Casey County. The Cards are coming off a disappointing 49-14 home loss to Garrard County, while the Rebels are 0-2 in district play and 0-7 overall on the season.
The contest marks the 22nd meeting between the rivals, with Wayne County owning a 15-6 all-time series advantage. The Rebels have won three of the past four meetings in the matchup, including a 19-13 overtime win in 2003, at Jewell Field.
The Rebels, under the direction of 4th year head coach Andy Stephens, have struggled throughout the 2004 campaign. Last week Casey County trailed Corbin 41-7 at the end of the first quarter and dropped a 41-19 decision to the Redhounds.
“Casey County is a scary team to face. They were in a similar situation last year and won their last three games and made the playoffs, so we know they’ll play all out with nothing to lose,” said Cards head coach Shawn Thompson.
Casey County’s offense uses multiple sets paced by talented quarterback Kyle Long. Long is another dual-threat signal-caller that makes plays with the run and the pass. The senior stalwart has totaled 10 touchdowns and over 1,200 yards of total offense.
“Casey County uses several different sets and has a nice quarterback in Kyle Long. After watching tape of our game with Garrard County, I’m sure they’ll try to spread us out,” said Thompson.
Casey County averages 13.6 points per game and scored a season high 20 points, in a 56-20 loss to Pulaski County. One of the key players on the offensive unit is Marcus Patterson. Patterson scored all three of the Rebels’ touchdowns last week, in three different ways. The athletic junior returned a kickoff for a score, caught a pass for a score and added a touchdown run late, against Corbin.
“Defensively we have to go back to work and swarm the football. Our intensity level needs to improve this week and we have to go back to the basics. Last week we made too many mental mistakes and that can’t carry over this week,” said Thompson.
Wayne County’s offense is averaging 28 points per game, but struggled last week. The unit totaled just 192 yards last week, with 163 of that coming on the ground. Matt Goff leads the unit with 17 touchdowns and is coming off a 26 attempt, 128 yard effort.
“‘We just didn’t execute with any consistency and that’s disappointing. We had a couple of good, solid drives, but for whatever reason the effort just didn’t carry over. We have to sustain our blocks and play hard every play,” said Thompson.
The Cards will attempt to improve on a Casey County defense that bases out of a 50 look. The Rebels have allowed over 37 points per game, through seven games, highlighted by two solid efforts against Harrodsburg and Lincoln County. The unit held a good Harrodsburg squad to just 24 points in a 24-12 loss in week two and later held 3A foe Lincoln County to 20 points in a 20-12 loss in week five.
“We have to go back to solid, hard-nosed, aggressive football and that starts this week in practice. We still control our playoff fate and have a chance to do good things, but we must be focused and ready for Casey County,” said Thompson.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Casey County High School’s Rebel Field.
