Board may consider teachers’ request to dismiss classes Oct. 27
MITCHELL GREGORY
News Reporter

The Wayne County School Board didn’t take action Monday night on a request to dismiss classes on Wednesday, October 27—the day that the Kentucky Education Association voted to strike for changes in the state’s proposed health insurance plan.

The board did note that if the state legislature, currently in session to deal with the health insurance crisis for state employees, does not resolve the issue by October 27 they could hold a special meeting to consider this request. The request was made by the Wayne County Education Association, represented at Monday night’s meeting by Shirley Simpson.

Simpson told board members that the teacher’s organization is very concerned about the lack of adequate health insurance that has been proposed. Though KEA has voted to strike October 27, the local teachers indicated they did not want to strike.

“Strike is such a negative thing,” stated Simpson.

Instead, Simpson said several members of the Wayne County Education Association had approached her about possibly getting classes dismissed in the local school system on that day. Simpson said that if the board agreed the day could be made up at the end of the school year.
