Inmate escapes from jail

Officials are continuing to search for an inmate who escaped early

Friday morning from the Wayne County Detention Center.

John R. Helton, 43, of Parkers Lake, escaped from the facility sometime

between 12:52 and 1:27 a.m. Friday, according to Jailer Ray C. Upchurch.

Upchurch indicated that Helton forced the chain linked fence loose from

the bottom support post in the recreation yard on the minimum security side

of the jail.

Upchurch said Helton, a state inmate, was a community custody Level 1

inmate who was previously out on community work detail.

The local 911 center, Kentucky State Police and the Department of

Corrections was notified.

Helton is described as 5¹3² tall, weighing 140 lbs. He has brown hair

and green eyes. Officials said that he has a large scar on his left knee

from a cut sustained in a chainsaw accident.

Anyone with information on Helton should notify the Wayne County

Detention Center at (606) 348-6781, Kentucky State Police at (606) 878-6622

or the local 911 dispatch center.
