SHANNON HUTCHINSON
Sports Writer
The Wayne County Cardinals hosted Corbin last Friday night at Jewell
Field, in their final district game of the season. The Cards entered with a
2-1 district mark and were coming off a 74-42 win at Casey County. Corbin
owned a 2-0 league mark and entered the 21st meeting between the rivals with
a 19-1 all-time series advantage. The Redhounds claimed a 35-14 win in 2003,
at Campbell Field, en route to a district championship.
Corbin quarterback Clint Cashen completed 17 of 26 passes for 289 yards
and totaled four touchdowns, as the Redhounds rolled to a 51-14 road win.
Cashen, a 5-11 190 lbs. freshman, passed for scores of 8, 18 and 43 yards,
plus scored on a 1 yard run, as the visitors improved to 6-3 on the season.
The Redhounds battled through two first quarter turnovers to total 16
first downs and 437 yards of offense. Versatile junior Eric Blackwood
tallied five catches for 50 yards with two scores and added a 51 yard punt
return for a touchdown.
³I was proud of our effort and the fact that we didnıt quit, but we
missed too many tackles and made too many mistakes to win the game. Corbin
has a very good football team and like our other losses this season they
spread us out. They made us pay for our lack of overall team speed,² said
Cards head coach Shawn Thompson.
The Redhounds scored the gameıs first 24 points and enjoyed a 31-7
halftime lead. Corbin was able to push a 2-0 lead into a 24-0 advantage with
three touchdowns within a five minute period in the opening half.
We dodged a couple of bullets early, but then the wheels came off early
in the second quarter. To beat a team of Corbinıs caliber we have to be at
our best and unfortunately we had a couple of big plays that hurt us,² said
Thompson.
Wayne County, which dropped to 5-4 on the season and 2-2 in district
action, finished with 317 total yards and 16 first downs. Senior runningback
Matt Goff led the way with 186 rushing yards, on 25 attempts. Goff added his
school record 22nd rushing touchdown on a 19 yard run.
³Anytime you put up 186 rushing yards against Corbin, thatıs a good
night. As a team we were able to move the football. We lost the battle of
field-position early and our special teams play was certainly a
disappointment. We just have to build on the positives and go back to work
and learn from this game,² said Thompson.
The teams traded turnovers early, before a Cardinal holding penalty in
the end zone resulted in a safety. Corbin owned a 2-0 lead with 5:51 left in
the first quarter.
The Redhounds scored their first touchdown of the night on their fourth
offensive series of the game. Travis Prewitt returned a punt 56 yards and
Brad Lawson scored two plays later on a 3 yard touchdown run. Clint Cashen
connected with Isaac Mills on the conversion pass to push the lead to 10-0
with 2:02 left in the opening period.
Wayne County picked up four first downs in the first stanza, but their
best drive stalled at the Corbin 38 yardline.
Corbin opened the second frame with an 11-play, 88 yard drive, capped
off by Cashenıs 8 yard scoring strike to Eric Blackwood. Dub Woody added
the extra-point to push to a 17-0 lead with 9:12 left in the first half.
Wayne County fumbled away the ensuing kickoff and the visitors quickly
turned the miscue into points. The Hounds used just two plays to travel 27
yards and scored on Clint Cashenıs 18 yard pass to Eric Blackwood. The
extra-point pushed the score to 24-0 with 8:47 remaining in the second
period.
The Cards answered back with a big play of their own. Junior quarterback
Ryan Steele connected with Josh Bell for a 45 yard touchdown pass, to
cap-off an efficient 3-play, 67 yard march. Joe Coffey added the extra-point
to close the gap to 24-7 with 7:45 left in the quarter.
Corbin responded right back with a 9-play drive of 65 yards and scored
on a Cashen 1 yard score. The extra-point pushed the lead to 31-7, which was
the halftime score.
³At halftime we tailed 31-7, but it just didnıt feel like that type of
game. We were able to do some good things, but they made some big plays that
hurt,² said Thompson.
Wayne County opened the second half with the football and for the fifth
straight week, the Cards scored on their first offensive series of the third
stanza. The hosts used 9-plays to march 62 yards. Matt Goff scored on a 19
yard run and Joe Coffey booted the extra-point to close the score to 31-14
with 9:04 left in the third quarter.
The teams traded empty possessions, before Eric Blackwood returned a
Wayne County punt 51 yards for a touchdown. Dub Woody added the extra-point
to push the lead to 38-14 with 5:49 left in the frame.
³We cut the lead to 31-14 and then get the football back, at that point
I felt we were very much in the game. We couldnıt move the chains and they
score on a punt return. Our special teams play must improve very soon and
the thing thatıs so disappointing is we work on that stuff everyday in
practice,² said Thompson.
Corbin pushed the lead to 44-14, with only :23 left in the third period.
Clint Cashen completed a 43 yard scoring strike to Isaac Mills, to cap-off a
4-play, 71 yard drive. The extra-point was blocked, leaving the score at
44-14.
The Redhounds rounded-out the scoring late in the final period, on
Travis Prewittıs 1 yard touchdown run. Dub Woody tallied the extra-point,
which ended the visitors 12-play, 63 yard march.
Wayne County threatened to score inside the gameıs final minute, but a
fumble at the Corbin 2 yardline ended the threat. Corbin ran out the clock
and claimed their 18th straight victory in the series with the 51-14 win.
³We played with a lot of intensity and effort, but Corbin has so many
quality athletes. They are back healthy and very explosive on offense. I was
proud of our run defense, we didnıt allow them to just run over top of us,²
said Thompson.
The Wayne County defense did force two turnovers and was led by the
season high 17 tackles of linebacker Ryan Steele. Matt Goff and Josh Bell
totaled 10 tackles each respectively, while Joe Coffey netted 9 stops.
Up next for Corbin is a district championship showdown with Garrard
County. Both teams own 3-0 marks and the winner takes the #1 seed.
The Cards have already clinched the #3 seed and will face the winner of
this weekıs Desales and Western contest.
³It looks like either way weıre making a trip to Louisville for the
playoffs, but thatıs still a week away. We have to get our focus back and
prepare for McCreary Central. They arenıt competing in a district this year,
so weıre their playoffs. Iım sure theyıll be ready and we should as well.
Senior Night is always a special night for all of those guys,² said
Thompson.
