Rogers to seek death penalty against two defendants in Wells murder case
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

Commonwealth Attorney Larry Rogers will seek the death penalty against

at least two of the five defendants charged in connection with the murder of

William Wells, Sr.

Rogers stated his intention to seek the death penalty against Richard

Taylor, Jr. and George Maupin during a hearing in Wayne Circuit Court Monday

morning. The issue came up after attorneys for Taylor and Maupin filed

motions for bond to be set for both men.

Taylor and Maupin were arrested and charged with murder on May 17, a day

after the elderly Wells man was found beaten to death in his rural Wayne

County home. His son, William Wells, Jr., who was confined to a wheelchair

and lived in the home, was seriously injured.

Other defendants in the case include Kathi Shelton, Elizabeth Miller and

Scotty Upchurch. All five of the defendants were in the courtroom on Monday

morning. A host of attorneys were also present in the courtroom Monday as

well.

George Sorenberger, who represents Taylor, had filed a motion for bond

to be set for his client. A hearing was held on the matter, and Jim Cox, who

represents Maupin, also joined in the request for bond for his client.

Rogers opposed any bond being set for either of the defendants, and it

was at this point that he announced he would seek the death penalty against

Taylor. He later announced that he would also seek the death penalty against

Maupin.
