Operation Christmas Child is underway locally`

Itıs never too early to start thinking about the season of giving, and
churches around the county are already preparing to bring joy to children in
need around the world.
Operation Christmas Child is underway, and First Baptist Church in
Monticello will serve as a relay center for this yearıs event. The local
church will serve as a drop-off site for the gift-filled shoe boxes during
National Collection Week, which is November 15-19.
According to Dennis Wheeler, who is serving as relay center coordinator
for First Baptist Church, this is part of the effort to provide more
regionalized drop-off centers around this area.
First Baptist Church was added as a relay center last year, but during
previous years, shoe boxes were taken to Pulaski County.
Those who participate in areas of Clinton, Cumberland and McCreary
counties will have a more convenient location to drop off their boxes, if
they bring them to Wayne County.
Operation Christmas Child has continued to grow each year. Last year,
Wayne County gave about 500 of the boxes and this year the goal is just a
little higher, at 750.
Over 6.6 million gift-filled boxes were collected worldwide last year,
and distributed to children living in countries where poverty, terrorism,
famine, disaster and disease are a way of life. This yearıs international
goal is to collect and distribute 7 million shoe box gifts.
