Operation Christmas Child is now underway locally Itıs never too early to start thinking about the season of giving, and churches around the county are already preparing to bring joy to children in need around the world. Operation Christmas Child is underway, and First Baptist Church in Monticello will serve as a relay center for this yearıs event. The local church will serve as a drop-off site for the gift-filled shoe boxes during National Collection Week, which is November 15-19. Operation Christmas Child has continued to grow each year. Last year, Wayne County gave about 500 of the boxes and this year the goal is just a little higher, at 750. Shoe boxes are filled with a variety of different items from small dolls and cars to soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. This year, gift-filled boxes will be sent to children in some 100 countries around the world, including children suffering in the Darfur region of western Sudan, hurricane victims in Grenada, and children who survived the recent terrorist attack in Beslan, Russia.
