Christmas Parade is Friday
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

Christmas officially arrives in downtown Monticello Friday evening with

the Chamber of Commerceıs Annual Christmas Parade. But along with the

traditional holiday colors, this yearıs parade will include a lot of the

red, white and blue.

The theme is a ³Star Spangled Christmas,² and so far, float

participation is up from a year ago, according to Penny Thompson,

Administrative Assistant for the Chamber. As of Monday, 18 floats had

entered this yearıs parade, but she expects that number will increase by the

time the procession begins at 6 p.m. Friday.

Parade entries will be accepted through Friday. The entry fee for floats

is $10. All other parade entries are $5. Thompson noted that all entries

must be registered through the Chamber office in order to participate.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place floats.

Thompson said that Cardinal Sanitation is sponsoring the first place prize

of $100.

American Woodmark is sponsoring second and third place prizes, which are

$75 and $25 respectively.

Out-of-town judges will select float winners.

This yearıs parade will honor World War II veterans and so far, Thompson

said at least 33 Grand Marshals have been selected to lead the procession.

A total of 75 names of World War II veterans have been submitted to

parade officials. These names will be read during the live broadcast of the

parade on Channel 8.

³We have 33 who will actually ride in the parade, but that number will

probably increase before Friday,² said Thompson.

The veterans will lead the procession in a number of different cars,

which are being provided by Drake Chevrolet.

While the parade is slated to begin at 6 p.m., downtown will come alive

with holiday lights at 5 p.m. with the annual tree lighting ceremony on the

lawn of the Wayne County Courthouse. Holiday music will be provided by the

Bell Tones and the Wayne County High School Choir. Brother Dale Rose will

read the Christmas story.
