Battery C will be home for the holidays
Melodie Phelps
News Editor

A local drive to raise money to bring members of Battery C home for the

holidays has been successful.

Last week, members of the Family Support Group were working to raise the

final $5,000 needed to bring the members of the local unit home from Ft.

Dix, New Jersey for a 10-day holiday, when a local business announced they

would match up to $2,500 in donations collected there.

Wayne Auction Barn began the drive on Monday, November 29, and the

community response was tremendous.

³We met our goal the first day,² noted Lisa Perkins, with Wayne Auction

Barn.

Members of the Family Support Group have been pleased with the way the

community has supported members of the local unit during the recent

mobilization.

³We are very appreciative of the community support,² said Robin Simpson,

who heads up the Adopt-A-Soldier program for the Support Group.

Simpson said that so far, every member of the local unit has been

³adopted² which means that either a group or an individual has claimed that

soldier to write to and send a package to each month. But local residents

can still mail items to members of the unit. There is a list of items that

are recommended to send to the soldiers, that is published with this story.

Simpson is asking that anyone preparing packages for soldiers this month

bring them to the National Guard Armory, where they will be distributed to

unit members when they come back to Monticello on December 23. After that,

she said packages should be dropped off on the second Monday of each month.

The boxes will all be mailed together about the 15th of each month, so

they will arrive around the end of the month, noted Simpson.

She said that flat rate boxes are available at the Monticello Post

Office in two different sizes. The cost is the same to send each, which is

$7.70.

She explained that the weight of the package is not a consideration, as

long as the box can be closed. Boxes that are to be mailed each month must

go to the post office first and postage be paid before they are taken to the

Armory.

Following is a list of items that are recommended to send to the

soldiers: stationary sets, pens, gum, hard candy, snacks, razors, shaving

cream, shampoo, cotton swabs, hand lotion, wet wipes (unscented), foot

powder, mole skin, deodorant (scented), liquid soap, hand sanitizer,

mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrush, lip balm, dental floss, tissue,

fingernail clippers, sun block, bug repellent spray, cards, recreational

items, music, DVD¹s, games, and international calling cards.
