The Wayne County Lady Cardinals opened their 2004-2005 season, last
Friday night at Lincoln County High School Gym, against the Lady Patriots.
The Lady Patriots opened their season earlier in the week with a win over
Pulaski County, while the Lady Cards looked solid in pre-season scrimmages
against both Madison Central and Green County. Both Wayne and Lincoln are
considered two of the higher ranked teams in the 12th Region.
Wayne County used a 34-17 run in the middle quarters and erased an early
20-11 deficit, en route to a 57-48 road win.
Senior center Ashley Bell netted a team high 13 points with a game high
12 rebounds, plus tallied 3 steals with 3 assists. Bell, a recent Georgetown
signee, finished 4 of 11 from the field and a perfect 4 of 4 from the
charity-stripe, as the Lady Cards combined to make 14 of 18 free throws.
Junior reserve Latoyia Green chipped in with 11 points, all in the third
quarter, as two different winners placed in double-digits. Lindsey Dishman
added 9 points, while eighth grader Heather Stearns totaled 9 points and 4
rebounds, as eight of 11 Lady Cards that played, etched the scoring column.
³Considering all of Lincoln Countyıs experience, I thought we did what
we had to do to win the game, but we have a long way to go. We showed some
positive things, but we have several key areas that we must improve on. Our
transition game is an area that must improve, we just didnıt get enough easy
looks at the basket,² said Lady Cards head coach Tim Pyles.
Lincoln County, which dropped to 1-1, shot 9 of 18 from 3-point range
led by senior guard Jenny Ralston. Ralston shot 4 of 6 behind the arc and
finished with a game high 17 point. Amber Statham added three treys of her
own and netted 11 points. Six different hosts scored in the contest.
³Lincoln County is a very experienced team and they have several players
that shoot the ball extremely well, especially from 3-point range,² said
Pyles.
The Lady Patriots used the 11 first quarter points of Jenny Ralston to
roll to a 20-11 lead. Lincoln connected on 5 of 9 threes and shot 50 percent
overall in the opening frame, while the Lady Cards struggled to convert on
just 3 of 13 field goal attempts.
³We didnıt communicate on defense very well and I think early on that
can be contributed to first game jitters. Weıre playing several people in
new roles, so I think our nerves showed, but Lincoln also made some big
shots,² said Pyles.
Lindsey Dishman led five different Lady Cards in the scorebook, in the
second period with 6 points and scored 9 points in the first half, as Wayne
County used a 17-6 run to own a 28-26 halftime lead. The visitors made 6 of
15 field goal attempts in the second period, while Lincoln County cooled-off
and tallied on just 2 of 9 attempts.
³We settled down a little and relaxed, which allowed us to play more at
our tempo,² said Pyles.
Latoyia Green exploded for all 11 of her points, in the third quarter,
aided by 3 3-pointers and perfect 4 of 4 shooting from the field. Green
paced four different Lady Cardinal scorers, as Wayne County used a 17-11
third quarter edge to push to a 45-37 lead. Four different Lady Patriots
scored in the frame, as the hosts tallied on 4 of 9 field goal attempts.
³We finally limited our turnovers and Latoyia made three big shots on
three straight trips against their zone,² said Pyles.
Mandi Perkins and Heather Stearns both made 4 of 4 free throws in the
final quarter, as Wayne County converted on 10 of 12 free throws down the
stretch to take a 57-48 win. Lincoln County made all 8 of their free throw
attempts in the period, but was plagued by 1 of 10 shooting from the field.
Kara Gothrup netted 7 points and Mandi Perkins added 4, as both players
totaled 3 assists each respectively. Courtney Duncan and Chelsey Smith
scored 2 points each, to round-out the eight Lady Cards in the scoring
column.
Lincoln County finished 14 of 42 overall for 33 percent and made 9 of 18
3-pointers for 50 percent. The hosts tallied-on 11 of 15 free throws for 73
percent and finished with 18 turnovers.
Wayne County connected on 17 of 47 overall for 36 percent and made 9 of
31 3-pointers for 29 percent. The Lady Cards committed 29 turnovers and
finished 14 of 18 from the charity-stripe for 78 percent.
A bright spot for the Lady Cards was the play of the bench. The reserves
accounted for 26 of the teamıs 57 points.
³I was extremely pleased with our bench play. I thought everybody that
played contributed and gave a solid effort,² said Pyles.
The Lady Cards have a very busy week ahead. The squad hosts Russell
County on Monday night and continues district action on Thursday night at
McCreary Central. Wayne County wraps-up the week on Saturday in the
North-South Shootout in Covington, against Notre Dame.
³We have a very busy week and need to use this week as an opportunity to
improve each time we play. Two big district games and a difficult trip to
northern Kentucky,² said Pyles.
