Lady Trojans win first district game against McCreary Central
Jessica Mullins
Sports Writer

Anyone who knows the game of basketball knows that defense can win a

game, and that was the case when the Lady Trojans took on McCreary Central

on Friday night. Monticello traveled to McCreary County for the first big

district match up of the season.

Coach Kelsch noted, ³The girls had some jitters as they stepped onto

McCreary Central¹s floor. They knew this was a big district game and that

made them nervous. We were out of sync at first but we settled down and

played good defense, and got the ball inside.²

The first quarter started slowly as the Lady Trojans worked out their

nervousness. Monticello was able to get one of McCreary¹s best inside

players in foul trouble early in the first. Lindsey Waters picked up her

second foul late in the first quarter. McCreary Central however out scored

Monticello 14 to 8.

During the second quarter Waters sat out, due to foul trouble, and Coach

Kelsch felt this is when the Lady Trojans got a run on McCreary Central.

³McCreary wasn¹t very effective without Waters. We made a run and scored

most of our points from the inside,² said Coach Kelsch.

Coming out the third quarter the Lady Trojans started off slowly again.

However, Monticello played tough defense and contained McCreary¹s two key

players, Lindsey Waters and Tara Tucker.

³Alesha Gehring played excellent defense against Tucker and kept her to

a minimum,² said Coach Kelsch.

At the end of the third quarter the Lady Trojans were down against

McCreary Central by one, 37-36.

Two plays that stood out during the game came in the fourth quarter when

Molly Vaughn brought down an offensive rebound and put it back up for two

more points. This gave the Lady Trojans the momentum they needed to finish

up the game.

Coach Kelsch stated, ³We played a good fourth quarter and our defense

really stepped up when we needed it to.²

The fourth quarter showed a big turn around for Monticello. Their field

goal percentage was 46 percent and they shot 66 percent from three point

range.

³Overall we played a good game. Many girls stepped up and gave us

quality minutes. We also had two girls, Sierra Adams and Rachel Bristow, in

double figures. However, we didn¹t have as many assists or steals as we did

the first game and our free throw percentage was down.² Coach KeIsch noted.

Rachel Bristow was high scorer with 16 points, while also bringing down

10 rebounds. Sierra Adams also played well scoring 14 points and getting 12

rebounds.

The Lady Trojans are now 1-0 in the district and 2-0 on the season. The

next game for the Lady Trojans will be Friday December 10 against Corbin at

home. The varsity game will begin at 6 p.m.
