Monticello City Council approved a new four-year agreement to provide
fire service to county residents, during a meeting on Monday night. The new
contract, which includes a $16,000 annual increase in the fee paid by the
county, would require action by the fiscal court to become effective.
The current agreement expires at the end of this month, according to
Mayor Thurston Frye. Frye told council members Monday evening that a
committee of representatives of city and county government had met to
discuss a new contract.
Currently, the county pays the city $88,000 a year for fire protection.
With a new contract, the county would pay the city $104,000 each year. The
new contract would run through December 2009, if approved by the county.
Councilman Dan Daffron, who met with county officials to discuss the new
contract, voiced disappointment that the fiscal court had not approved the
agreement during their meeting last week.
³We tried to stress that $16,000 was a very minimal increase, and thatıs
why Iım disappointed that there was no action taken at their meeting,²
stated Daffron.
Councilman Alan Richard-son made a motion to approve the new contract.
After a second by Councilman Kelvin Upchurch, the agreement was approved by
a 4-0 vote. Councilmen Proctor Rankin and Ivan Tuggle were absent Monday
night.
Also during Mondayıs meeting, the council heard the first reading of an
ordinance to accept Barnes Drive and Rolling Hills Boulevard into the city
street system. During a special meeting on Wednesday, December 8, the
Monticello City Council agreed to draft the ordinance that would include
these streets in the city.
