Lady Cards win at McCreary Central 52-38
Shannon Hutchinson
Sports Writer

The Wayne County Lady Cards traveled to McCreary Central last Thursday

night in an important district contest for both teams.

The Lady Cards opened district play earlier in the week with a 34-23 win

over Russell County, while the Lady Raiders were coming off a 54-49 loss to

district foe Monticello.

Wayne County was looking to improve on a 2-0 start, while Central owned

a 1-1 record in the early season.

Wayne County shot 8 of 12 from the field in the decisive fourth quarter,

which included 3 of 3 shooting from 3-point range, during a 22-10 run en

route to a 52-38 win.

Senior forward Ashley Bell led three scorers in double digits with 15

points, plus grabbed 8 rebounds with a season high 5 assists, in the road

win.

Bell finished 6 of 17 from the field, to pace the balanced attack.

³This was a good win on the road and I thought we played our best

basketball of the season in the fourth quarter. We created some easy baskets

off our defensive pressure, which is really the first time we¹ve been able

to capitalize on that this season. Our depth was also a factor late, I

thought they were fatigued late and we made some good things happen,² said

Lady Cards head coach Tim Pyles.

Junior guard Lindsey Dishman netted 8 of her career high 14 points in

the fourth quarter.

Dishman shot 4 of 6 from 3-point range and 5 of 10 overall from the

field, with 3 rebounds, to aid the Lady Cards¹ effort.

³Lindsey has matured as a basketball player on both ends of the floor

and made some big shots in the stretch run. I think her comfort level

continues to improve each game as she adapts to the speed of the game,² said

Pyles.

Junior forward Latoyia Green added 10 points and 4 rebounds, to round

out the three visitors in double figures.

Eight different Lady Cards scored in the contest, as the squad improved

to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in district play.

McCreary Central, which dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in district

action, was led by the talented duo of Lindsey Waters and Tara Tucker.

Waters, a sophomore forward, netted 13 points with a game high 10

rebounds.

Junior guard Tara Tucker finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 5

steals, as the duo accounted for 26 of their squad¹s 38 points.

³McCreary Central really attacked the basket well, especially in the

first half. They were able to break us down off the dribble and defensively

we just didn¹t rotate very well. We allowed them to control the tempo for

three quarters and didn¹t play with the intensity or consistent effort

needed on the defensive end,² said Pyles.

The teams opened on near-even terms in the first quarter, as Wayne

County made 5 of 9 field goal attempts to take a 12-11 lead. Tara Tucker

paced the Lady Raiders with 7 points in the first period.

Junior Brittany Gregory paced four different Lady Cards¹ scorers in the

second stanza with 4 points, as Wayne County used a 14-12 period edge to

push to a 26-23 halftime lead.

McCreary Central used a trio of players with 4 points each in the

quarter, to offset a 3 of 16 shooting effort from the field.

Defense and poor shooting dominated the third period, as the teams

combined for just 9 points. Wayne County was a dismal 1 of 20 from the field

in the frame, as the Lady Raiders used a 5-4 advantage to close the gap to

30-28, after three quarters.

³We were too quick on offense and just didn¹t get a lot done. Our

defense kept us in the game in the third quarter,² said Pyles.

The trio of Lindsey Dishman, Latoyia Green and Ashley Bell combined to

tally 20 of Wayne County¹s 22 fourth quarter points, as the Lady Cards ended

the game on a 22-10 run, to claim a 52-38 win. Four different Lady Raiders

scored in the final period, but the hosts couldn¹t find a way to stop the

Lady Cards on the offensive end.

³The biggest difference in the fourth quarter was we were able to get

our inside-outside game to work pretty well. We started to find people, make

the extra pass and finally was able to get into an offensive rhythm.

Hopefully that¹s something we can build on,² said Pyles.

A review of the stats shows Kara Gothrup and Brittany Gregory added 4

points each, while Courtney Duncan totaled 3 points with 5 rebounds. Mandi

Perkins and Meg Latham contributed 1 point each, to round-out the eight Lady

Cards in the scoring column.

McCreary Central finished 15 of 50 overall for 30 percent and tallied on

1 of 8 3-pointers for 13 percent. The hosts made 7 of 8 free throws for 88

percent and committed 22 turnovers with 9 steals and 4 assists.

Wayne County countered with 19 of 55 shooting overall for 35 percent and

made 7 of 17 3-pointers for 41 percent. The winners claimed a 28-25 rebound

edge and connected on 7 of 12 free throws for 58 percent. The squad totaled

10 steals and 16 assists against 18 turnovers.

Up next for the busy Lady Cards was a Saturday evening contest in

northern Kentucky against Notre Dame.

³Notre Dame is a very talented team and we¹re going into a tough area to

take a road trip. This will be a good trip that should help our younger kids

understand how to deal with some adversity. This will be our third game of

the week, plus we bounce back with an important district game on Monday, so

hopefully this will be a good learning experience,² said Pyles.
