Monticello takes 64-51 win over McCreary Central
Jessica Mullins
Sports Writer

Monticello won its first district game this season against the McCreary

Central Raiders. Not only is this the first district win for the Trojans

this season but the first in around four years. Monticello has now won four

straight games.

Monticello played aggressively as fans have seen all season long.

McCreary Central is a tough match-up as the teams were neck and neck at the

end of the first quarter. Monticello however was ahead of the Raiders 13-12.

The second quarter also proved to be a tough game as the two teams

continued to battle back and forth. As the buzzer rang for halftime the

Trojans led the Raiders by one point, 31-30.

The Trojans did find themselves in some foul trouble against the

Raiders.

³As I have said before, we are a very aggressive team and that often

causes us to get into foul trouble. However, our boys need to start thinking

smarter at this stage of the game,² commented Coach Gary Abbott.

The Trojans and Raiders came out ready to play the second half as

Monticello lost its lead and gave way to a 37-37 tie at the end of the third

quarter. The fourth quarter played out differently as the Trojans lost their

lead to the Raiders. They did regain composure and were able to pull out the

win, 64-51.

³I was proud of our boys in the fourth quarter when we fell behind but

didn¹t give up. We did a good job of getting back into the game and pulling

off the win,² said Coach Abbott

Monticello was able to contain the Raiders to only four field goals in

the second half, nevertheless, the Trojans gave up nineteen points from the

free throw line. Monticello¹s free throws were not as good. The team shot

only 41 percent for the contest.

Coach Gary Abbott continued to play a deep bench with ten players seeing

game minutes. Two Monticello players did foul out. Michael Borden received

his fifth foul with four minutes to go and Travis Bell got his final foul

with two minutes left in the game.

Top scorers for the game against McCreary Central were Borden with 17

and Branscum with 13.

Over the holiday break the Monticello Trojans will be competing in two

holiday tournaments. First the Trojans will travel to Old Male High School

to play in St. Frances Tournament December 17 and 18. Then December 27-29

Monticello will participate in the McCreary Central Tournament.
