A house fire on Spann Hill Saturday afternoon resulted in the tragic

deaths of two young boys, according to local officials. Jacob Gantz, 6, and

his brother, Aaron Gantz, 4, were pronounced dead at the Wayne County

Hospital at approximately 5:15 p.m. Saturday by Coroner Marvin S. Hicks.

The two were apparently playing at their grandmotherıs house, which was

located next door to their home.

According to information from the Coronerıs Office, a neighbor noticed

smoke coming from the house a short time later.

Monticello Fire Chief Steve Ferrell said the 911 dispatch center was

notified originally of a structure fire at 3:31 p.m. Minutes later a second

call came in to relay the information that two children had been pulled from

the structure.

The first fire and EMS crews arrived on the scene at 3:43 p.m. and began

CPR efforts, according to Ferrell. Ferrell indicated there was no one else

in the house at the time of the fire.

³At this time, we suspect no foul play,² stated Ferrell. He said the

cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Detective Henry Nunn with Kentucky State Police is the lead

investigator, with assistance from the Monticello Fire Department, the Wayne

County Sheriffıs Department and the State Fire Marshallıs Office.

Ferrell said the fire was contained to the living room area of the home.

Heat and smoke damage occurred throughout the home. He indicated the

brothers were found in the kitchen near the back door of the home.

According to the Coronerıs Office, the two boys were found unconscious.

After rescue efforts at the scene, they were transported to the Wayne

County Hospital by Wayne County EMS where they later died.

Autopsies were conducted in Frankfort on Monday morning to determine the

exact cause of death. Deputy Coroner Forrest Hicks stated that smoke

inhalation is a possibility.

The boys are survived by their father, Jason Gantz. Funeral arrangements

were incomplete at press time.
